Fall has arrived in Virginia! The mornings are getting cooler, the days are getting shorter, and before long we'll be enjoying changing leaves and crisp fall evenings throughout Hampton Roads.

As we move into a new season, it's a great time to take care of a few simple things around your home—and make sure your insurance coverage has kept up with any changes you've made during the year.

A Few Fall Home Safety Reminders

Before colder weather settles in, consider adding these items to your fall checklist:

• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed and make sure detectors throughout your home are working properly.
• Have your fireplace and chimney checked. If you use a wood-burning fireplace, it's a good idea to have it inspected and cleaned before the first fire of the season.
• Clean gutters and remove leaves and debris. Keeping gutters clear can help rainwater drain properly and away from your home.
• Check outdoor lighting. With the sun setting earlier, good lighting around steps, walkways, porches, and driveways becomes even more important.
• Watch for deer and wildlife. Deer can be especially active around dawn and dusk, so use extra caution during your morning and evening drives.
